Ride the Bus with Us...

OCTOBER

The Houston Moonlight Bicycle Ramble was established in 1972.  For some people this is the only 20 miles they ride each year.  For others it will be just another great time.
I have done this ride off and on since I was 16 years old.  I've ridden with my wife, my friends, in the freezing rain, in the freezing cold, in the Houston heat and 100% humidity (in October at 2am) and most of the time in absolutely beautiful cool fall weather.  People come from all over Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antone, I even met an Okie or two over the years.  This is controlled lunacy.
In 1998, the City of Beaumont sponsored the Moonlight Madness.  Ours occurs in late April to early May on a weekend nearest the full moon.  It will be announced on our web site.  Like the Houston ride, the Moonlight Madness attracts people from Houston, Dallas, Austin, even "East LA."
We have chartered a bus for participating members of the Bicycle Sports family since 1993 so we could safely cruise to Houston for the ride.  It has been hard to do some years, but thank's to encouragement from Uncle George and Miss Sherry, we kept a good thing going.  After the ride, we will stop for breakfast.   Seating is limited.  Contact us for reservations.
Sherry,  the bus rolls out at 10pm every year.  Thanks for your encouragement.
Festivities begin Saturday Nite at 11pm
Ramble begins Sunday morning at 1:59:60 am
The bus is us!  All the way from Beaumont!
It takes a village:
Joe & Derin carefully mounting bikes in the cargo compartment.
Luke making sure the wheels, seats and frames are labeled.
Hi, Sherry!
Michael making sure the bikes are secure.  It's a group effort.
 We're ready.

If nothing else, I am an instigator, but...
One night I awoke in a sweat.  I had convinced a number of our clients that they needed to go to Houston and participate in the Houston Moonlight Bicycle Ramble.  What caused me grief is the thought of them driving back after the event.  It doesn't start until 2am.  It ends at 4-4:30am.  Then there's that long BORING drive back.  I woke in a panic thinking that I might have been responsible for another of those crosses that dot IH 10 West of Beaumont and worse that it would represent one of my friends.
I talked with a friend of mine, Neil David, about my dream.  After some discussion, we called the Great Outdoors Bus Line in Groves, TX.
I met Neil at the Great Outdoors Bus Barn to take some measurements Stephanie agreed to drop a bus off with us for a few hours.  So, one hot September afternoon Neil and I pioneered the technique we use today to fasten bicycles to a custom cut sheet of plywood in the underbelly of the bus.
One year a 14 yr old kid got permission from his parents to go with us.  But his mom's peers convinced her that she was a horrible mother and shouldn't let him go to Houston- "It's in another county and for God's sake it's in the middle of the night!"  She also knew that the genie was out of the bottle.  So she added one condition... he would have to let his mom go as well.  He agreed.
As a sort of concession, she brought cheesecake for everyone on the trip.  Talk about make friends... so we kicked in a few pizza pies and we had a porta-party centered around wheels!  Pizza, cheesecake and bicycles.  She changed our ride forever.  I wish I could remember her name.  I do remember that she is a Psychologist and they moved to Houston shortly after their ride.
That was the last time we had cheesecake, but we always have pizza and a movie and a really good time.  Join us!

 '08 Ramble Pics

This years Ramble was really great!  The weather was perfect.  Every year when we get there a small group of us goes for a ride thru downtown.  Last couple of years Andrea Tatum & I have gone for a coffee and a bowl of soup, only this year the restaurant had new hours and was closing as we arrived.  We had a bigger group this year too.
Coffee in downtown Houston at 1am proved to be an impossible thing to find.  We met a group of riders who had just ridden in from "mid-town", something I had never heard of, and they gave us directions to a coffee shop, where we whet our whistles.

Rose & me, at midnite & I'm tired but looking forward to a good time.

Rose & Boogie, The First Man and the First Lady of Cycling Cycling in Southeast Texas, why, heck, I guess that makes them the First Couple of Cycling!

The Belly Dancers & me at the half way point of the 2007 Houston Moonlight Bicycle Ramble.  This was the 9th Ramble that these Ladies of Dance have charmed us with their enchanting moves.
We stopped at Denny's for breakfast on the way home
